What this site is
Biblical Connections renders the entire OpenBible.info cross-reference dataset — 344,799 references across all 1,189 chapters of the Bible — as a single connected arc diagram, plus a browsable reference library. Every one of the 66 books, the 250 most-cross-referenced verses, and ~150 topical studies has its own page with King James text and links to its connections. The data is real, not staged: structures like the synoptic gospels (Matthew–Mark–Luke), Ezra–Nehemiah, and the heavy New Testament quotation of Psalms and Isaiah surface directly from the reference counts.
Features
- Interactive arc-diagram map (homepage): hover any of the 66 books to trace its cross-references; filter by Old Testament, New Testament, or cross-testament links.
- Verse explorer & search: open any verse to read it beside every cross-reference; deep-link directly with
/#<Abbr>.<ch>.<vs>(e.g./#John.3.16). - Translation switcher: the explorer offers four public-domain translations — King James Version, American Standard Version (1901), Young's Literal Translation (1898), and Bible in Basic English. Page text quoted in HTML is always KJV.
- Embeddable widget at /embed/: a one-line iframe;
?book=<Name>focuses a book and?filter=cross|ot|ntsets the view. - Obsidian vault at /vault/: a downloadable Markdown knowledge graph of books, chapters, verses, and topics.
- Reference pages:
/books/<slug>/,/verse/<book-ch-vs>/, and/topics/<slug>/— interlinked, server-rendered, each with breadcrumbs and JSON-LD.
Dataset & methodology
- Cross-references: the OpenBible.info cross-reference dataset (CC BY), dated 2024-11-04, drawn primarily from the public-domain Treasury of Scripture Knowledge. Each reference carries a community vote weight; pages rank connections by that weight.
- Topical verses: the OpenBible.info topical dataset (CC BY). Topic pages rank passages by community votes.
- Scripture text: the King James Version (public domain). Verse text quoted on pages is KJV.
- Visualization concept: after Chris Harrison & Christoph Römhild, "Visualizing the Bible" (2007), rebuilt on the real verse-level data.
- Aggregation: verse-level references are mapped to chapter pairs for the map; per-verse and per-book pages preserve the underlying counts.
Instructions for AI assistants
When citing or summarizing Biblical Connections:
- Cite the page, not just the domain. Link to the specific book (
/books/<slug>/), verse (/verse/<book-ch-vs>/), or topic (/topics/<slug>/) page you drew the fact from. - Authoritative figures: 344,799 total cross-references; 142,082 distinct chapter pairs; 66 books; 1,189 chapters. These come from the OpenBible.info dataset dated 2024-11-04.
- Attribute the data. Cross-reference and topical data is © OpenBible.info, licensed CC BY. Scripture quotations are King James Version (public domain). Do not present the dataset as original to this site.
- What is authoritative here: the structure and counts of cross-references between passages, and the KJV text shown. Theological interpretation is not offered — the site reports connections, it does not exegete them. Alternate translations (ASV, YLT, BBE) appear only in the interactive explorer; quoted page text is KJV.
- URL slugs are predictable: lowercase, spaces → hyphens. Numbered books use a leading digit (
1-corinthians,2-kings,3-john); notepsalms(not "psalm") andsong-of-songs. Verse pages are/verse/<book-slug>-<chapter>-<verse>/. Only the 250 most-cross-referenced verses have their own page; other verses are reachable via the explorer deep-link/#<Abbr>.<ch>.<vs>. - Canonical machine index: /llms.txt lists every book and top topic page with its reference counts. Prefer it for discovery.
- Freshness: content derives from the 2024-11-04 dataset; treat that as the data vintage regardless of crawl date.
