Why you'll see different numbers elsewhere
Cross-references are editorial, not canonical — no two reference Bibles agree on the exact count. A printed study Bible may list 60,000; another may claim 100,000. The figure depends entirely on which reference apparatus you count. 344,799 is the size of the OpenBible.info dataset specifically, which is the largest openly-licensed set available and the one this site maps in full. When you see a number quoted without a named source, it is usually a publisher's count of one particular edition's margin notes.
How they break down by testament
Slightly more than half of all cross-references stay inside the Old Testament. The most striking group is the third: roughly one reference in five reaches across the testament divide, which is the structure the map on the homepage makes visible as the band of arcs spanning the full width.

How the count is measured
Every reference in the dataset is directional: it runs from one verse to another verse or passage range. Of the 344,799, 329,684 join two different chapters and are drawn as arcs on the map; the remaining 15,115 connect two verses inside the same chapter, which would draw no visible arc. Collapsing the verse-level references to the chapter level yields 142,082 distinct chapter-to-chapter pairs, each weighted by how many references join those two chapters. 29,324 verses — about 94% of the roughly 31,102 in the King James Version — carry at least one outgoing reference.
